Chapter Six
After a week locked up in the castle, I needed to get out. Richards drove me to Helvsgard, the village at its base.
It was truly lovely to see Richards again. It had only been a week, but it felt like an eternity. He still wore the same little peaked cap, still had the same kind smile, and still insisted on calling me maâam, to my great frustration. I was beginning to think he did it just to get a rise.
âAnd how is the little master?â he asked as we drove to the village, the lake stretching away on our right to forest beyond.
âBaxter? Heâs having the time of his life. Iâve left him at the Kennelsâhe thinks heâs king of the dogs; trots around like he owns the place, digging holes and stealing food.â
âHeâs a very... unique little animal, that one.â
I shook my head, looking out the window as the scenery wound past. âIâm not doing so well up there, Rich.â
âThe fighting between Sir and his mother?â
I looked toward the front seat sharply. âYou know about that?â
His eyes met mine in the mirror. âThe entire castle does. Itâs hard not to hear it.â
âDo you know whatâs going on?â I asked quietly.
Here, Richards paused. âNot entirely,â he said eventually. âBut Iâve been present at many of their arguments, so Iâve been able to piece together a little.â
I sat forward, desperate. âPlease, you have to tell me.â
âIt would cost me my job. Itâs the closest thing to a state secret this kingdom has.â
My mouth opened, anxious for an answer, but then it shut. Richards had been so kind to me. No matter what my personal issues were, I didnât have the right to ruin his life. âThank you for being honest,â I said. It was hard to keep the disappointment from my eyes. âI wonât ask you to betray your employer.â
His eyebrows quirked in the mirror. âWell you should. Because in this case I think the two of them are both bloody fools.â
My mouth fell open. âDid I just hear you swear?â
âYou certainly didâexcuse the French.â We pulled into a park in the main street of town, but Richards didnât exit to open my door. Instead he turned, elbow on the back of his seat, to face me. âLook, all I know is this, and it was many years ago. Two days after the KingâSirâs fatherâdied, Zurenstein declared war. They share our Eastern border, and their military is many, many times larger than ours. Their king, Fredrick the Second, is a small minded, suspicious man hated by most of the neighboring kingdoms.â
âWhy did they declare war?â I asked. Xander had said something about this before. I struggled to remember. âWas it because Alonia was weak?â
Richards shook his head. âI worked for His Royal Highness before he died. Alonia was never weak. We couldnât have withstood a full assault from Zurensteinâs army, but we would have taken too many of them with us for an easy victory. They had superior numbers, but we loved our King and Queen.
